When you're getting out of a piping hot shower and step into the cool air and onto cold tiles, there are few things as luxurious in that moment as slipping on a warm, cozy robe—that is, if you have a warm, cozy robe. Even though we use them almost daily, robes are often something we don't invest in, which results in using a scratchy, ill-fitting, or non-absorbent robe that makes getting out of the shower (and waking up in the morning) even less pleasant.

A great robe should feel like a gentle hug—cozy and soft but still breathable and lightweight. It should make getting out of the shower a joyful experience, not one you dread. So what makes the perfect robe? Well, there are a few things, and we consulted with Good Housekeeping Institute's Senior Textiles Product Analyst Emma Seymour to find out exactly what to look for.

Robes comes in a variety of different materials, and you might find that different fabrics work better for different season. "Often, bathrobes are made from the same material as towels with many towel brands using their towel material to also offer bathrobes," Seymour says. "Therefore, plush terry robes are very popular. There are a lot of other options though too, including, silk, cotton waffle weaves, polyester fleece, flannel, and more."

A plush terry robe is a go-to option for hopping into right out of the shower because it's one of the most absorbent materials. However, plush robes can get warm quickly, and while we specifically selected robes that are breathable, you might not want to use one while getting ready in the summer months.

For those days when it's already 85 degrees at 8 AM, you may want to have a lighter weight robe on hand. Lightweight cotton, silk, or linen robes are also perfect for getting ready in as they'll provide room for movement and air flow while you're running around or drying your hair.

On the flip side, if you're looking for a robe that'll keep you toasty or that's great to lounge in, you might want to look into a plush robe or even a flannel option.

Robes typically come in three lengths—over-the-knee, knee-length, and mid-calf—though there are other options. The hemline of your robe is important for warmth, of course, but also coverage. If you spend your mornings running after kids or around the house, you might not want an over-the-knee hemline as these are prone to slip open more easily.

A few other features you should look into before purchasing would be pockets and a modesty tie. All of the robes we've selected on this list have pockets, but their size and sturdiness fluctuate.

A modesty tie is an inner tie that helps provide full chest coverage on a robe. While they're not essential, they're wonderful to have if your robe is made of a slinkier material like silk, stain, or cotton.

This editor-owned-and-loved robe is nothing short of a wearable cloud. It's soft and cozy but not overly plush, perfect for just about every season.

This is a robe that truly gets better with every wash. Each fiber grows softer and it gives the robe that perfect vintage t-shirt effect while still remaining ultra-cozy.

The only downside for this robe is the sizing. While we would rate the sizing overall as fairly generous, there aren't many sizes available. Select from XS/S-XL/XXL.

Waffle weave robes make wonderful summer robes or even an all-season option if you prefer something more lightweight, which is why we love that this ettitude robe has longer sleeves. Paired with the knee-length hem, it makes for a robe that's suitable no matter the time of year.

Made from soft lyocell, this robe rivals (or beats, in our opinion) even the softest cotton robe. The honeycomb structure of the weave is also a pro at wicking moisture quickly and efficiently.

Sizing on this robe is fairly generous, though it does only come in sizes S-XL.

This Amazon's Choice robe features a true textured waffle weave that's perfect for soaking up moisture and keeping a lightweight and breathable feel. For those hot summer days when you need to toss something on right out of the shower, few things are as nice as this robe.

Made from 60% cotton and 40% polyester, the robe is fairly durable and washes up easily. The length is perfect for a modest covering while still being breathable. The only point of concern with this robe is that the sizing is limited and a bit odd. Take note that one size = large in this scenario, so the sizing would be S/M, OS/L, and XXL.

If you're looking for the perfect summer robe, it's hard to beat this option from Lake. Made from 100% Peruvian Pima cotton (their signature fabric, in case you love their PJs, as well), this robe combines silky smoothness with incredibly slinky softness to create a robe that somehow hugs you and lets you breathe at the same time. This fabric is also what makes it perfect for summer. It's breathable and lightweight but still slightly absorbent, aka the perfect robe to get ready in on those days when it's already 85 degrees at 8 AM (our Alabama-based editors know this type of day all too well).

In addition to all of this, Lake's size range is one of the best we've seen. With options from XXS-XXL, you're sure to find the perfect fit. It's important to note, though, that the robe will shrink after the initial wash. The only downside to this beauty? It is on the pricier side. But, if you're willing to invest in a high-quality piece you'll use daily for years to come, then this is a great option.

For a less-expensive, lightweight cotton robe option, try this one from Amazon. It's 100% cotton and comes in a variety of colors, though be careful with your selection because the product listing also includes micro-fleece options.

We love the knee-length hem and wide kimono-style arms of this robe, making it incredibly comfortable and perfect for throwing on while getting ready during the summer months. It also features two front pockets to store your phone or anything else.

Because it's not made from as high-quality of cotton as the Lake robe, we don't expect you'll see nearly as much durability with this robe as its more expensive counterpart and it's not as soft. It's a great option if you're looking for something budget-friendly that'll do for the time being (or if you're okay buying another in a year or so). It's also a maternity favorite of moms-to-be!

When it comes to the robe that you want to wear when you're trying to get ready in 20 minutes on a 90 degree day (we've all been there!), then there's no better option than silk. It's the ultimate fabric for breathability and is incredibly lightweight, so you can trust that you won't break a sweat—even if you're drying your hair on high heat with max power.

This robe from Fishers Finery is made from 100% Mulberry silk, which is harvested from domesticated silkworms to ensure consistency in quality. It grows better with age and softens with every wash, creating a robe that you'll be excited to climb into everyday. In fact, it's Seymour's go-to option for getting ready on warm days. It features both an outer tie and an inner modesty tie to make sure you're completely covered.

As with any 100% pure top-quality silk, the Fishers Finery robe is on the pricey side. But, we consider it totally worth it for the wear and durability you'll get out of this robe. Another thing to note about silk and satin robes is that since the fabric is so smooth, they can tend to slip open easily. It's essential to have an inner modesty tie on these to make sure you're always completely covered.

Finding high-quality 100% silk robes on a budget isn't an easy feat, but it's not impossible. Quince is our one-stop shop for top-notch luxury fabrics at bargain prices, which is why their 100% silk robe is our favorite inexpensive option.

Like the Fishers Finery robe, the Quince robe is also constructed from 100% Mulberry silk, the highest quality available. It's so lightweight that you'd almost be fooled that you're not even wearing a robe, until you feel the slinky softness of the silk graze your skin. This option also includes an outer tie and inner modesty tie.

So, why does the Quince robe not get the top spot? One word: sizing. And by that, we mean there is no sizing. The Quince silk robe is a one-size fits all piece, which we all know isn't one-size fits all. If you're willing to gamble on the fit, then we say this is a great budget-friendly option.

When you're looking for the warmest thing possible to wear on a frigid winter morning, look no further than this flannel L.L. Bean option. Made from Portuguese cotton flannel, it's designed to keep you cozy and warm while also being breathable so you don't have to worry about overheating.

This robe falls generously below the calf, at a nearly maxi-dress length, to provide ultimate comfort and modesty. It's the perfect additional layer over your pjs for a weekend morning or to toss on right out of the shower. The fabric is yarn-dyed to maintain optimal color-fastness.

On the flip side, if you're looking for a robe that will keep you covered better than a silk option but still offer breathability, then linen might be the choice for you. Linen isn't as soft as silk, but it's almost as lightweight and equally as breathable.

Parachute's linen robe is made from 100% European flax in the Guimarães region of northern Portugal and garment washed for the softest, most comfortable touch. They crafted the robe to be slightly heavier than their signature linen bedding to achieve the perfect drape.

Linen is always going to be a pricier option, but Parachute's robe is fairly well-priced for such a luxury item. We also love that it's machine washable, unlike many linens.

We're big fans of Quince's cashmere (they made our top cashmere sweater list), so it's no surprise that this robe found a spot here. For a splurge-worthy robe that you'll want to spend all day in, look no further.

Quince's cashmere is sourced from Mongolia, the top-tier in quality for softness and durability. While you're getting the best quality, though, you're paying a fraction of the price by going through Quince.

The one downside of this robe is that the sizing isn't the most inclusive. With only S-L options, this robe might not be a fit for everyone.

If you truly want a reason to get excited to wake up and shower every morning, then snag this terry robe right now. Made in Portugal from 100% organic long-staple cotton, this robe is like getting a hug from a cloud—cozy and comfortable while also lightweight and breathable.
