Gemini meteor shower over the Oregon/Washington coast. But can you see it?

(Long Beach, Washington)-On the night of December 13-14, a fascinating sight will appear in the sky above the Oregon coast and the Washington coast. But the problem will lie in the clouds. Either way, the Geminid meteor shower will peak from Monday night to Tuesday morning, and as many as 60 to 120 meteors may be seen every hour. (Photo courtesy of NASA)

Some places east of the coastline may have some cloud breaks, so some places in the eastern end of Oregon and Washington state may see some, but the chances are small, because the northwestern region forecasts that it will rain or snow at night in most places .

However, this may not be the total loss, as another meteor shower will overlap this one and then peak later this month.

According to Portland OMSI astronomy expert Jim Todd (Jim Todd), for those trying to make observations on the Oregon coast or the Washington coast-or anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, Monday night and Tuesday morning will be Peak period. This is a meteor shower that can produce sparkling effects before midnight, and may start as early as 10 o’clock in the evening

However, astronomers around the world say that because of the moon, the best time is usually a few hours before dawn.

The Geminid meteor shower is one of the most spectacular meteor showers this year. It produces bright and colorful meteors. However, the moon in the evening will interfere with the sight, but it will be later.

Todd said the Gemini meteor shower came from debris from the 3200 Phaethon asteroid, and its orbit was unusual, similar to a comet. Therefore, it is often referred to as a "rock comet". NASA’s STEREO spacecraft inspected its dust tail ten years ago. According to data scientists, there may be a muddy dry lake bed on this rock that emits some particles when it comes into close contact with the sun.

Weather forecasts on the Washington Coast and Oregon Coast show that there will be night rains Monday to Tuesday morning, but there will be a certain degree of fine weather at night in parts of the interior. If you are in Westport, Washington, Coos Bay, yachts, or the seaside, it may be worthwhile to look out every once in a while to see if there is a clear sky in the night sky. Even on rainy nights on the coast, it is notorious for breaking up from time to time.

However, please keep hope because the Geminid meteor shower will last until December 17. The last meteor shower this year is the Ursa Major meteor shower. It will appear between December 13 and 26 and reach its peak on December 21.
