Her character Alex woke up one morning and found out that her TV co-host Mitch Kessler had been fired on charges of sexual assault.

Not only does she have to deliver news to the country while dealing with her feelings about the situation, but she also tries to renegotiate her contract with the Internet.

In an interview with "Entertainment Weekly", Jennifer said that her complex emotions have been shocked: "This character has never appeared in front of me earlier than now.

"This is one of the hardest jobs I have ever done. I know I can do this task, but in order to create this world for this woman, all emotions have been unearthed. All her lifelines are disappearing.

"When I walked out of these scenes, it felt like a manhole cover just fell off my back."

With Mickey’s departure and Reese’s character Bradley Jackson fighting for her position, it’s no surprise that Alex felt isolated at home and on the Internet.

This is something that Jennifer admits that she can understand. She has starred in one of the biggest sitcoms, each of which plays Rachel Green in Friends.

She said: "I understand isolation-I don't want to be seen, I don't want to be public, I don't want to go on the red carpet.

"It's not always easy to get out and be who you have to be."

Jennifer also described how she easily connected with the "vulnerable" side of the character.

But there are few-if any-similarities between Alex and Rachel, the show's director Mimi Ryder revealed this. "This is a very different performance from Jennifer Aniston. I think people will lose their minds.

"No one has ever seen Jane Aniston jump into the abyss like this. She is a woman on the brink."
