He rose to international fame and fortune with head-spinning alacrity.
He boasts 55.4 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, where his music videos have garnered more than 13 billion views, by some accounts he earns upwards of $150,000 per show and in 2019, just four years after bursting on the EDM scene, Forbes estimated he hauled in a staggering $56 million.
He released his fourth studio album (“Shockwave”) in 2021, which led to his first Grammy nomination, and he did it all before he was 30 years old while wearing a cartoonish marshmallow-shaped helmet that obscures his face entirely.
With all that lucre pouring into his bank accounts like a tap that can’t be turned off, Chris Comstock, known professionally as the powerhouse DJ and music producer Marshmello, upgraded his residential circumstances two years ago, to a $10.8 million mansion in a celeb-favored gated enclave above Beverly Hills.
Now, he’s had his multimillion-dollar starter house in L.A.’s fabled Laurel Canyon cleared of personal belongings, staged with a bunch of rented furniture, and hoisted on the market at $5.5 million. An oasis just outside the hubbub of West Hollywood and the Sunset Strip, it appears few substantial alterations have been made since Marshmello acquired the custom-crafted property in late 2017 for $3.7 million.
Set behind secured gates and partly obscured by towering hedges on a lushly planted quarter-acre parcel that nestles into a steep hillside, the nearly 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom and five-and-a-half-bath residence is an organically contemporary combination of concrete, wood, and glass. Inside, premium finishes and eye-catching flourishes abound.
Marketing materials describe the muscular wood and glass floating staircase as “the architectural centerpiece of the house” but the home’s trio of fireplaces are also of particular note. A double-sided gas fireplace encased in a monumental free-standing steel volume divides the formal living and dining rooms, a pane of glass separates the two sides of a see-through fireplace in the family room, and a similar see-through fireplace in the main bedroom is shared with a faux-grassed private balcony.
Other highlights include a spacious, expensively outfitted eat-in kitchen that flows easily into both the family room and the backyard, as well as a second-floor lounge with a bar for intimate entertaining. All four guest bedrooms benefit from a private bath, while the main bedroom offers a pair of walk-in closets and a spa bath with a glass-walled shower and a soaking tub set on raised decking.
The backyard isn’t especially large, but it is desirably flat, sun kissed, and thoughtfully configured to include lots of multi-level decking, a small patch of lawn, a loggia with built-in barbecue, a linear fire pit, and a swimming pool and spa fed by a sheet of water that pours out of a concrete wall.
