Peak meteor shower, lunar eclipse over Washington/Oregon coast

(Manzanita, Oregon)-Next week, look for a dynamic week in the sky above the coast of Oregon and Washington. At least astronomically, the Leonid meteor shower and partial lunar eclipse will make it very orange or red.

Whether the weather will cooperate is another matter, but the forecast seems to have some dark clouds at night.

The partial lunar eclipse occurred around midnight on November 18, and the most complete state occurred around 1 am on November 19. The peak of the Leonid meteor shower occurs from November 16th to the early morning of November 17, and about 10 meteors may be seen every hour.

If you get a clear night on the Washington coast or the Oregon coast before late November, you may still see some Leonid meteor showers, but the peak time is from November 16th to the early morning of November 17th.

Jim Todd, an astronomy expert at Portland OMSI, told the Oregon Coast Beach Connection that the Leonid meteor shower is sometimes known for its historic mammoth show, and the meteor "falls like rain."

"Although no storm is expected in the Leonid meteor shower in 2021, you can still see a lot of meteors between November 6 and 30," Todd said. "Meteors are the result of the Earth’s rushing into the orbit of Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. Comets are scattered with debris in their orbits. These dust hit the Earth’s atmosphere and evaporate, producing what we know as meteor light. In 2021, the moon is in a gradual state. The gibbous moon phase. It will linger on most nights, illuminating the sky and washing away many meteors. Try to watch from a rural, dark sky position for the best results."

If you are in the countryside, you think of Washington or the coastline of Oregon-you are right. Brookings College, Coos Bay, Newport, Cannon Beach, Long Beach or Raymond will have many dark areas to watch, especially around an hour before dawn. Todd said that it was when the moon was down, giving you the best chance to see a small meteor.

"When night falls, you may be eager to see meteors," Todd said. "But remember, it’s best to take a shower after midnight. If you can, take a nap in the evening. After midnight, lie down comfortably and let your eyes wander around the sky. Sometimes friends like to watch together and face each other. Different directions. When you see someone, you will call out a meteor! Then everyone can quickly turn their heads and take a look."

Then spend the night on November 18th and 19th, looking for a partial lunar eclipse. Although the shadow of the earth will almost completely cover the moon, it will remain visible, but will turn dark orange or red.

"The whole event will last about three and a half hours. Some events will start at 11:18 PM (November 18) and end at 1:02 AM (November 19), and will end at 2:47 AM ( November 19) ends," Todd said. "At most, the moon will be 60 degrees above the southwest horizon, which is perfect for viewing. During a total solar eclipse, only a small part of the moon is directly exposed to the sun, and the rest of the moon should appear The typical copper color of a total lunar eclipse."

You will most likely have to avoid some raindrops in the beach town or between the two, so be prepared for the weather.
