Except for Woody Allen's movies, few people have seen such a large apartment around 1900. This is a purpose-built "French apartment", one of four apartments that debuted in neoclassical limestone buildings in the early 20th century.

The unit is located on the third floor of No. 953 President Street in the Park Slope Historic District near the Army Plaza. It has been reconfigured to suit modern life, but retains its magnificent style and original details.

The initial advertisement was a seven- or eight-bedroom apartment with a maid’s room. The monthly rent was $58. It was only for "small, select families". Now it has a restaurant, office, three bedrooms, and two. Bathrooms, laundry in the unit, and an astonishing number of closets.

Unpainted woodwork and parquet floors with delicate inlaid borders run through the entire apartment. There are stained glass on both sides of the entrance door, built-in seat can be flipped for storage, mirror and coat hook. The living room has bay windows, a mantelpiece with pillars and tiles. Outside the hollow screen is the library or office.

Adjacent is the restaurant, closed by a pocket door, and decorated with Candace Wheeler's bee-themed aesthetic sports wallpaper. The updated kitchen is equipped with wooden cabinets, soapstone counters, wooden floors and a Bertazzoni stove.

When it was newly built, the kitchen and dining room were behind the apartment, which was a typical practice at the time. The original dining room is now the master bedroom, but it retains the panelling and columnar mantel with tiles. It has two closets and a modern en suite bathroom with shower and laundry room, which includes an exhaust gas dryer.

There are two spacious bedrooms below the hall, each with closets. The shared bathroom is large, with white subway wall tiles, hexagonal floor tiles, pedestal sinks and tiled water factory bathtubs. According to the floor plan, there are a total of nine closets, including two walk-in closets, one of which can also be used as an office space.

The unit is now a cooperative and the monthly maintenance cost is US$1,350. If you want to see this rare item with your own eyes, please make an appointment for an open visit on Thursday, November 11th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
