Water use in California has skyrocketed in recent months, with state officials raising alarm bells due to last March being one of the driest stretches on record. The state is now calling for increased water conservation efforts amid a severe drought warning. The Bay Area has been hit particularly hard by this drought, with many cities reporting water levels at all-time lows. In response to this, residents are being asked to reduce their water usage by 20%.

But how can the average resident reduce their water impact by this suggested amount? While this may seem like a small number, it’s actually a significant undertaking for a typical household to commit to.

According to the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency (BAWSCA), the average household uses about 400 gallons of water per day. This amounts to the volume of water required to fill an average swimming pool in just one week!

The year on year trends are showing us that higher temperatures and prolonged periods of water deficit will become commonplace, especially during the drought season. Therefore it’s time for everyone to reassess their relationship with water use at home.

But how can we implement such drastic water saving goals without it massively impacting the way that we live? There are some practices and daily habits that you can easily use to make considerable water savings. You can turn the tap off when brushing your teeth, fix leaky faucets, toilets, and pipes, use timed sprinklers in your yard and put down mulch to reduce water evaporation and run off.

One lesser known fact is that over 20% of household water usage comes from using your shower. A commonplace solution to help combat excessive water usage in the shower is to install a low flow showerhead. However these types of showers, which limit the amount of water that comes out of the showerhead, can cause an unsatisfactory rinsing experience.

That’s why Oasense, a technology startup based in Mountain View, California,  decided to create the world’s most intelligent water-saving shower, the Oasense Reva showerhead. Reva uses first of its kind advanced sensor technology to give you 100% automatic full pressure rinsing that saves up to 50% water each time you shower, taking the pressure off your household water consumption. Oasense also engineered a hydro-turbine within the device which generates 100% clean energy from your water to power the sensors, to enhance the water and energy saving benefits. Reva can save an average of $268 per year in a typical four person Californian household, as well as contributing to local water saving efforts.

The Oasense Reva showerhead is fully automatic and completely hands free and gives you the freedom to shower as you normally would, safe in the knowledge that your showerhead will do the water saving for you. Just turn on your tap and Reva will start conserving water as soon as your water has heated by limiting the flow to 15%. Once you step under the showerhead, Reva uses its advanced sensor to detect your presence, and will automatically immerse you in 100% full pressure flow. When you step back to lather up, the flow will reduce to 15% again and then wait for you to step back underneath to fully immerse you in your ideal water temperature.

Oasense wants to raise the expectations of water saving showers, by preserving what people love the most about their shower; full pressure rinsing, enjoyable water temperature and ease of use. Oasense has achieved this with Reva by using technology to bridge the gap between sustainability and experience.

Reva’s pilot users have expressed their satisfaction with the ease of using the product as well as the benefit of having a compact all-in-one design screw on showerhead that can be easily installed into any shower location. This intentional design feature was included in order to promote this accessible water saving device, in the hope that it would encourage others to participate in easy water saving contributions in their homes.

The Oasense Reva showerhead is the pioneering new way to save water and was selected as the winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award 2022 from Germany. It was also recognized as a World’s Changing Ideas by the Fast Company in 2020 and given the 2022 Innovation Award by the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
