"For example, jojoba oil, which mimics the skin's natural sebum, is unlikely to clog the pores of acne sufferers, while coconut oil has been shown to clog pores," said Dr. Garshick. "So, although coconut oil can moisturize, it is not a good choice for people who are prone to acne."

In the end, both dermatologists agreed that oily and acne-prone skin types should stick to cleansers containing anti-acne ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. If you choose to use oil, make sure you look for options that do not cause acne, which means that the formula will not clog pores.

If you have skin conditions, such as keratosis pilaris, bath oil may also be beneficial. "Patients with keratosis pilaris also experience dry skin, so it is important to keep the skin moist, so bath oil may be a useful option," said Dr. Garshick.

Dr. Finney said that there are several ways to use bath oil. "I ask some patients to apply oil before showering to protect their skin. When they clean, they will remove less natural oils," he said.

You can also use bath oil after cleansing to moisturize your skin. Dr. Garshick said that you can also apply bath oil immediately after showering to help lock in moisture and ensure that your skin is maximally moisturized.
