Leo Meteor Shower in 2021: when and where you can see meteors

Be sure to watch the sky next week: the peak of the Leonid meteor shower will appear in the night sky in late November 16, especially early November 17.

The Leo meteor shower seems to come from the Leo constellation in the east (hence the name), but they can be seen throughout the sky.

Some of the greatest meteor showers I have ever seen are the Leo meteor showers. For some years, they have been a mature meteor "storm". EarthSky said that the Leo meteor shower in 1833 had a speed of up to 100,000 meteors per hour.

However, no such storm is expected this year.

According to EarthSky, under ideal conditions, you can see 10 to 15 meteors during peak showers. Unfortunately, in 2021, we will have to face the waxing gibbous moon, which will make it difficult for us to see fainter meteors. Before dawn on November 17, the best time after the moon sets.

Another sky wonder: the longest partial lunar eclipse of this century is here: how to look at the frosty moon

Meteors are also called "shooting stars" and are actually comet dust left over. They are dust and debris the size of peas and sand that shattered from Comet Tempel-Tuttle as it swayed around the earth. (The orbit of the earth allows it to pass directly through the debris trajectory.)

Dust and debris ignite when they hit our atmosphere.

NASA says the Leonid meteor showers are also fast: they travel at 44 miles per second and are considered to be one of the fastest meteors there.

Here are some tips for watching meteor showers, provided by NASA:

In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will start to see shooting stars. Please be patient-the show will last until dawn, so you have enough time to see it.
